Microsoft starts monthly patching regime Posted by: trraju on Oct 25, 2003 - 01:13 AM

Microsoft has released its first monthly patch bulletin, with five patches out of a total of seven rated as 'critical'.
Four of the critical flaws, and one rated as 'moderate', affect Microsoft's range of operating systems, from NT4 to the new Windows Server 2003, which is the first code written since the company declared itself to be more security focused last year. Of the critical OS flaws, three patches fix holes that would allow buffer overruns to be initiated, while one prevents hackers running code remotely on infected machines.
The other critical flaw affects Exchange Server and could allow remote code to be run by a hacker. The Outlook web client, meanwhile, is hit by a moderate flaw.
This is the first security bulletin since Microsoft made the decision to send out patches on a monthly instead of a weekly basis.
"This new method means IT staff only have to devote one day a month to patching instead of four," said Stuart Okin, chief security officer for Microsoft UK.
"Where there is exploit code out there or hacking going on we will push out patches earlier, but otherwise we'll stick to the monthly system."
More information and patches can be found here.
