Microsoft beats virus attack

WASHINGTON, Feb 03, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The Microsoft Corp. announced Tuesday it successfully fought a virus that was designed to knock the company's Web sites off the Internet.
ydoom.b, a variant of the Mydoom worm that appeared last week, was programmed to command all of the computers it infected to access the Microsoft Web site at the same time in what is known as a "denial of service" attack.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that although Microsoft said its Web sites experienced no downtime, the company admitted the sites experienced a half hour of slowed performance Tuesday morning.

"We don't really think the slight slowdown was due to the worm, but more likely to people going to the site for information about the worm," said a spokesperson for internet measuring firm Keynote.

While last week's Mydoom worm successfully infected an estimated 500,000 computers, taking down Utah's The SCO Group's site, Mydoom.b infected only a small fraction of that number.

Mydoom.b is programmed to continue its attempt to take down Microsoft's Web sites until Feb. 12, but it is not expected to have any effect.
