SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Upstart Good Technology Inc. announced Tuesday a deal to extend its corporate wireless e-mail service to handhelds based on Microsoft Corp.'s Pocket PC operating system, stepping up the competition in the heated mobile market. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company's software, which allows business users to wirelessly access their e-mail accounts in real-time, could already run on palmOne's Treo 600 smartphone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry devices. Good also unveiled its newest software version, GoodLink 3.0, which adds the ability to view e-mail attachments in their original formats, such as an Excel spreadsheet, or Adobe Acrobat file. Other new features include a miniaturized version of Microsoft's popular Outlook e-mail program, improved security and toggling multiple windows running different mobile applications.
All are improvements the company says will bring a ``laptop-like experience'' to various smartphones, the category of mobile devices that handles voice and data communications.
``We're not trying to claim we're replacing a laptop, but we're finding that people are thinking about leaving their laptops at home on business trips, and they can get all their e-mail and attachments on their handhelds now,'' said Susan Forbes, vice president of marketing and product management.
Privately held Good Technology launched its wireless messaging system in 2002, in direct competition with leading provider RIM. The two companies are now embroiled in a patent battle.
They are among many companies vying for business customers seeking powerful computing features in compact, portable devices.
``It's a race where the announcements by any vendor seems to move the bar further,'' said J. Gerry Purdy, principal analyst with MobileTrax LLC. With Good's newest software version, ``others will look to this as a mark that they will try to beat at this point.''
