IBM has announced that its IBM POWER technology has been chosen by three US universities that are involved in a project to build an online archive - called the Moving Images Collection - for the Library of Congress.

IBM POWER will be used in conjunction with the Linux operating system to place content such as film, TV and digital video images online from sources such as libraries, national archives, museums and broadcasting companies. The company claims that the archive will be the largest repository in the world for digital moving images, with more than 80,000 moving image resources, and will help the Library of Congress provide videos of important images such as video from the Hubble telescope.

The financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
