SCOTLAND'S call centres could see a "flood" of jobs shipped overseas in the next few years - but equally the industry could expand at a healthy pace, a major new report has claimed.
Dr Phil Taylor at the University of Stirling and Dr Peter Bain of the University of Strathclyde have spent the past 18 months studying call centres in Scotland and India. Their research, unveiled yesterday, identifies several big attractions in sending jobs overseas, but also unearths a slew of hidden costs that could discourage further "offshoring" of Scots work.

Mike Lynch, chief executive of software supplier Autonomy, came to prominence when he was labelled 'the UK's first internet billionaire' during the dot com boom. He may be worth a few bob less these days, but the company has remained profitable - thanks partly to a 98 per cent gross margin on sales of its software.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Federal agents arrested a Sunnyvale man Friday for allegedly making death threats to employees a Canadian company he mistakenly believed sent him spam on how to enlarge his penis.
Charles T. Booher, 44, faces a maximum statutory penalty of five years imprisonment and a $250,000 if convicted on the charges.

IT managers who thought that application service providers (ASPs) hosting software online had died with the collapse of dot-coms need to think again - in some sectors at least.
Today, ASPs are supporting customer relationship management (CRM), sales-force automation and other back-office tasks, including accounting, taking advantage of the arrival of cheaper internet connectivity, and more scalable applications. ASPs offer the advantages of low capital outlay, fixed payment schedules and ubiquitous client access - and this time they are attracting cash-strapped IT buyers.

Overall IT spending has bottomed out, and 2004 and 2005 will see a "minimum of strong single-digit growth" over 2003 levels, according to industry analysts.
