But as sales boom, the leading vendors are presenting differing views on how the technology should progress, so companies should plan their thin client strategies carefully.

On Sept. 24, a group of seven prominent security researchers released a paper putting the blame for the recent spate of nasty worms and the resulting computer network outages on Microsoft (MSFT). As they see it, the fact that Gates & Co. control 95% of the PC operating-system marketplace has created a "monoculture" that shares common vulnerabilities. This threatens to open the door to catastrophic failures of entire organizations when worms spread quickly over the Net. The paper proved controversial enough to get one of the signees fired, even though most of the info-tech world now agrees that monoculture is a serious problem.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Troubled computer maker Sun Microsystems Inc. revised its fiscal fourth quarter results Monday, taking a $1.05 billion charge after realizing its first-quarter loss will be greater than expected.

OTTAWA (CP) - Tundra Semiconductor Corp. retracted its announcement Tuesday that it had reached a deal to take over a Motorola Inc. product line.
The Ottawa-based chip designer said talks are continuing and the morning news release had been "inadvertently" distributed. That release announced an agreement with Motorola to develop new technology connecting PowerPC microprocessors to peripheral devices.
