IBM has called upon the IT industry to refrain from using patents to challenge Linux and open source. In an eerie reminder of SCO's litigation alleging that Linux infringes on its copyrights, a study by Open Source Risk Management (OSRM) released on Monday pointed out that the Linux kernel potentially infringes on 283 patents. The report has come under criticism, partly because OSRM sells insurance policies that indemnify companies against patent claims against Linux, making the conclusions self-serving.

The City of Munich insists that it has not changed its plan to deploy 14,000 Linux desktops, despite halting development for now in response to recent EU moves favouring the patenting of software. Munich is using the delay to urge all European open source advocates to lobby for protection against the EU's planned legislation. The city's website states that it will "uphold its strategic decision to prefer Linux" and that only the tender for "base clients" has been put on hold.

During the last winter solstice, I broached the subject of Linux for hams in "Surfin'," the weekly column I write for the ARRLWeb (www.arrl.org). In the days that followed the posting of my Linux Surfin' columns, I received more mail than about anything I have written in over a quarter of a century. Most of the writers were happy to see something in the Amateur Radio press about Linux and encouraged me to write more about the subject. Since this column provides more space than Surfin,' I will write more about Linux here.
