During the last winter solstice, I broached the subject of Linux for hams in "Surfin'," the weekly column I write for the ARRLWeb (www.arrl.org). In the days that followed the posting of my Linux Surfin' columns, I received more mail than about anything I have written in over a quarter of a century. Most of the writers were happy to see something in the Amateur Radio press about Linux and encouraged me to write more about the subject. Since this column provides more space than Surfin,' I will write more about Linux here.

The SCO Group has revealed the name of a Fortune 1000 company which has signed up to the SCO Unix licensing programme: US internet hosting provider Everyones Internet (EV1.Net).The SCO licence is with EV1.Net's hosting division, EV1Servers.Net, which runs a choice of Windows, BSD Unix and Linux servers for its users, providing them with an indemnity.

SEATTLE -- A British tech consultant has launched an unusual project that puts tech buyers in position to do something largely unheard of in tech circles: wrangle price cuts from Microsoft.The Incubator Club guarantees anonymity for tech buyers wanting to evaluate Linux. Founder Eddie Bleasdale of consultancy Netproject got the idea after helping the London borough of Newham test Linux desktop programs last fall.

Red Hat is handing over all its copyrights in the embedded real-time eCos open source operating system to the Free Software Foundation (FSF).

The SCO Group has chosen the season of goodwill to send letters to selected Fortune 1000 Linux users, identifying further alleged violations of its Linux copyrights. In an escalation of the case against Linux which began last March, the company said: "SCO has commenced providing notification to selected Fortune 1000 Linux end users outlining additional violations of SCO's copyrights contained in Linux."
