For the past several years, Microsoft has been watching, and reacting, as open-source advocates around the world have encouraged the adoption of the Linux operating system.Now the uprising has officially reached the company's back yard.Not one but two new Linux user groups have sprung up on the Eastside, not far from Microsoft's Redmond campus, scheduling regular meetings to learn and talk about the software that the company has identified as a serious threat to its Windows operating system.

On Jan. 16 some of the e-mail business' biggest brains will gather on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus at Spam Conference 2004. The one-day powwow will mark the event's second year and will feature 18 presentations from a wide variety of spam fighters.

In chatting with customers, Jeff Rodek, chief executive of software publisher Hyperion (HYSL), is noticing signs that the information-technology spending freeze of the past three years is starting to thaw. But until he sees revenues pick up at his business, which produces software for tracking management performance, Rodek won't go out on a limb and say 2004 will be the year U.S. companies finally start to increase their spending on technology.
