Microsoft Corp.'s products are sometimes criticized for leaning too heavily on concepts invented and introduced previously by others. The famous example is the graphical user interface -- developed by Xerox Corp. researchers, popularized by Apple Computer's Macintosh and used by Microsoft to dominate the personal-computer industry with its Windows operating system. But that isn't always the way it works. Apple, in fact, last week unveiled something similar in concept to a product Microsoft announced earlier this year -- but also different in ways that some analysts believe could give Apple an edge.

Microsoft building for first time in India

Microsoft Corp. has bought its first plot of land in India and is constructing its initial building there, solidifying its presence in the country at the epicenter of the debate over the outsourcing of U.S. technology jobs. The Redmond company had previously only leased space in India, where it employs slightly fewer than 1,000 people. The new building, in the high-tech Indian hub of Hyderabad, is the first in what may ultimately become a three-building complex.

Microsoft Office Focuses on Collaboration

The latest Macintosh edition of Microsoft Corp.'s Office suite does text, e-mail, spreadsheets and presentations with aplomb. Then again, so did its previous versions. The big hook for the new version, Office 2004 for Mac, is its improved business-friendly tools, so Mac users can share and manage data just as easily as people who run that other, more dominant operating system (hint: Microsoft also makes it).

Oracle, Microsoft getting friendly

Pragmatism won out over acrimony Thursday when software giants and longtime rivals Microsoft and Oracle announced a new partnership for technology development, the first formal agreement between the two companies.
Oracle, based in Redwood Shores, agreed to integrate its development tools into Microsoft's Visual Studio software development products. The link will make it easier to create Oracle database applications that run on Microsoft's Windows platform.

Microsoft's MSN to Team With Fox Sports

SEATTLE (AP) - Microsoft Corp.'s MSN online division is teaming with Fox Sports to create a cobranded sports Web site and is ending a similar partnership with ESPN. The multiyear agreement with Fox Sports, announced Thursday, will put Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft in charge of selling advertising for the new sports Web site. But initially at least, the new site won't be significantly different from Fox Sports' current Web site, said Lisa Gurry, director of MSN.

Microsoft warns of SSL attacks

Microsoft is urging customers to immediately install a recent software patch for Secure Socket Layer vulnerabilities in Windows because hackers are preparing to exploit the flaws. The patch, MS04-011, was made available on 13 April and is rated 'critical' by Microsoft. It patches 14 separate vulnerabilities, chiefly bugs in the SSL of all Windows systems.

Mobile risks highlighted

Firms should enforce security policies on mobile devices and use encryption to cut the risks arising from theft, according to analyst firm Burton Group. Legal liability for information found on misplaced machines and the increasing number of virus attacks are the main threats, according to the report, Managing and Securing the Mobile Device. Michael Disabato, service director at Burton Group, recommended data encryption as the mainstay of mobile security.

Microsoft aims to whip up CRM market

Microsoft is pushing sales of its CRM product through a variety of channels, including resellers of rival products and ASPs. The software giant is also working with telephony vendors on joint offerings and support. Most leading phone vendors have stepped up efforts to capture the small-business market, tabling new IP telephony and hybrid systems over the past few months.
