Microsoft has `patch' for latest hack flaw

Microsoft Corp. warned yesterday of yet another flaw in its Outlook e-mail program that lets hackers break into a personal computer and take it over.
Microsoft described the flaw in a monthly release of software ``patches'' to fix bugs in its software. The patches are offered to users over the Internet.

BRUSSELS -- Microsoft's last-ditch effort to settle a long-running European antitrust case fell apart Thursday.
Next week, regulators almost certainly will move to restrict the company's business practices and levy a hefty fine.

Microsoft Says It's Not Bankrolling Linux Opponent

Microsoft Corp. yesterday denied any financial involvement in a deal that provided $50 million to a company battling against users of Linux, the open-source operating system that has emerged as a competitive threat to Microsoft Windows.The statement followed the publication on the Internet of an e-mail that some view as evidence that Microsoft is secretly bankrolling lawsuits filed by the SCO Group against a number of companies, including IBM Corp. SCO alleges that its Unix technology was illegally incorporated into Linux.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - Going beyond Microsoft Corp.'s settlement of U.S. antitrust charges, the European Union wants to force the software giant to offer computer makers a version of Windows without any multimedia program to give rival companies a better shot at getting their products on consumers' desktops, sources said Wednesday.

Good Expands Microsoft's Wireless E-Mail

(AP) - Upstart Good Technology Inc. announced Tuesday a deal to extend its corporate wireless e-mail service to handhelds based on Microsoft Corp.'s Pocket PC operating system, stepping up the competition in the heated mobile market.The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company's software, which allows business users to wirelessly access their e-mail accounts in real-time, could already run on palmOne's Treo 600 smartphone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry devices.

Microsoft Takes on Teen Over Web Site

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Mike Rowe thinks it's funny that his catchy name for a Web site design company sounds a lot like Microsoft.
The software giant, however, is not amused.
``Since my name is Mike Rowe, I thought it would be funny to add 'soft' to the end of it,'' said Rowe, a 17-year-old computer geek and Grade 12 student in Victoria, British Columbia.
