Microsoft is offering free tools to allow customers to migrate applications from Unix and Linux to Windows.Windows Services For Unix 3.5 is available as a free download and supports Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003.

Microsoft offers Windows 98 reprieve

Microsoft has issued a reprieve to Windows 98, 98SE and Millennium Edition users by extending support until 30 June 2006. Support was due to end on 16 January.
The company said that the move was in response to client needs and to bring Windows 98SE's lifespan in line with other products.

Microsoft has extended support for Windows 98, 98SE and Millennium Edition (Me) for another 30 months.The software giant had previously said it would end all support and security patching for Windows 98 on 16 January, with Me support scheduled to end on 31 December 2004.

Last week, Microsoft launched its first paid ad lambasting Linux, the computer operating system Microsoft executives have long derided. Such barbs have done little to slow Linux's swelling popularity.

XML opens up Office 2003

Microsoft has opened up some of its Extensible Markup Language (XML) schemas to customers and partners developing solutions based on Office 2003. The move will help firms implement document management systems using XML technology and is being offered under a royalty-free licence to encourage use of the XML specifications, Microsoft said.

Giant Microsoft is still a stock to buy, in the view of Jonathan Rudy, analyst for Standard & Poor's Equity Research Services, thanks to its reasonable valuation and strong balance sheet and cash flow. "Reasonable valuation" means the price of Microsoft (MSFT) stock is low relative to some tech companies, which Rudy attributes to investors chasing companies that were hit harder by the tech collapse and thus have the potential for a more dramatic climb. But over the longer run, he still sees Microsoft as a bastion of strength.
