| Microsoft plans to expand access to its proprietary technology, making some of its 4,000 patents available for licensing to other companies. Taking a cue from companies like Intel, Hewlett-Packard and IBM, Microsoft said Wednesday that it will begin to standardize the way it licenses its closely-guarded technology. In the past, Microsoft provided licenses to only certain companies on an individual basis.

| Acer is locked in a struggle with Microsoft over the future of the Tablet PC.
The PC and electronics vendor is convinced that Microsoft is not doing all it can to push the technology. Jim Wong, president of the Acer IT products business group, complained that the situation was "a mess". Acer has invested heavily in the Tablet PC market, selling a range of four models.

| Microsoft Corp.'s annual shareholders meeting yesterday morning was notable as much for what wasn't discussed as for what was.
The landmark U.S. antitrust case against the company was barely mentioned during the hourlong session at Bellevue's Meydenbauer Center. That contrasted with past Microsoft shareholders meetings, including last year's session, which came a few days after a federal judge approved a deal settling the case. Executives and shareholders yesterday focused instead on such issues as the company's newest products, its financial performance and changes in its employee-compensation plan.
