Organise list of friends

When you have a huge set of friends in your Instant Messenger list, it becomes difficult to keep track of all of them. Add folders and name them appropriately, for instance, Family, Friends, Colleagues, and so on. You can now place names in the relevant folders. If you are using Yahoo! Messenger, go to Tools > Manage Friend List > Create Group.
In MSN messenger, the newer version by default organises or sorts the Friends list by groups. But if you are wondering how to sort them back to the online or offline status which your previous MSN version displayed, navigate to Tools > Sort Contacts By > Online/Offline.

Disable automatic saving of passwords

Never keep your passwords saved if you're sharing your computer, even though it makes automatic logins easier. Saving passwords makes it very easy for other users to log on using your name. In MSN Messenger or Yahoo!, during signing in you get the option to automatically save passwords. Disabling this option will prompt you for a password each time you log in.

Save your contacts list

If you have more than a handful of contacts in your MSN Messenger list, then it makes sense to have their addresses backed up somewhere just in case you run into trouble accessing your MSN account.
