How do I remove a virus or spyware in Norton AntiVirus?

If you suspect or know that the computer is infected with a virus, configure Norton AntiVirus to scan all files by performing the following steps:

Reboot the system in Safe Mode.

Click the yellow, round stethoscope icon or the yellow, round, gridded icon in the system tray to launch Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security, respectively.

The respective Norton program window appears.

NOTE: If using Norton Internet Security, click Norton AntiVirus in the left menu pane when the Norton Internet Security window appears.

In the left pane, click Scan for Viruses, then click Full System Scan in the center pane.

This process detects and removes the virus.

Once the scan is complete, reboot the system into Normal Mode and repeat steps 2 and 3.

If Norton AntiVirus still detects the virus, the virus itself is interfering with the removal process, or the virus is new and the computer does not yet have updated information for removing that particular virus.

To attempt to remove the virus, perform the following steps:

Make a note of the name of the virus.

To determine whether Symantec has additional instructions for removing the virus, search Symantec's online list of known viruses for the name of the virus.

Click the virus name.

If this step opens a new page, instructions for removing the virus are usually in a section called removal instructions near the end of the document.

If clicking the virus name does not open an instructions page, or Symantec does not have additional instructions for removing this virus, continue with step 6.

If clicking the virus name opens an instructions page, look for an attached file on that page.

If you find an attached file, the file is a removal tool for this virus. Download the file and run it to complete the virus removal.

The instructions for running the file are included on the instructions page.

After running the file, continue with step 6.

If you do not find an attached file, follow the instructions on the instructions page to complete the virus removal. Continue with step 6.

Restart the computer in Normal Mode and run Norton AntiVirus to ensure that no more viruses are reported.
