What if I receive an error while registering my Symantec product?

The registration process that occurs during the installation of your Symantec product requires that you have Internet access. If you do not have Internet access during the installation, then the registration will not complete.

NOTE: Some Symantec products require that you regularly update your subscription or that you apply a license in order to allow more than one person to use the product. These subjects are not the same as registration. For information on those subjects, consult your Symantec product's user guide or search the knowledge base for your Symantec product for "subscriptions" or "licensing."

The following steps provide workarounds and solutions for the following issues:

Bypass Registration Until After Installation

Unable to Establish Connection over SSL error message

Unable to Connect error message

Conflicting third-party applications

Product or Activation Key issues

Registering Symantec Norton Internet Security After Registration

Finish installing the product. During installation, if you see an option such as OK, Continue, or Next, which allows you to continue with the installation, continue with the installation. If you cannot continue with the installation, quit the installation. Then restart the installation and click Skip to bypass the registration process.

To register the product after installation, refer to the following Norton Internet Security URL: How to register Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall online after it is installed.

Troubleshooting Internet Connection Error Messages While Registering Norton Internet Security

You may see the following error message when registering a Symantec product:

Unable to Establish Connection over SSL

Unable to Connect

You may need to adjust your Internet settings. For the registration program to work normally, your Internet security settings must be set to Low.

To check and adjust the Internet Security settings for Symantec Norton Internet Security registration, perform the following steps:

Click the Start button, then click Control Panel.

NOTE: In Windows classic view, click Settings, then click Control Panel

The Control Panel window appears. Double-click Internet Options.

The Internet Properties window appears. Click the Security tab.

Select the Internet icon, then lower the security level bar to the lowest setting. Do this for the remaining three icons. Click Apply

Click the Advanced tab and then click Restore Defaults. Click OK to close Internet Properties. Restart the computer if prompted.

NOTE: When you change your Internet security settings to Low, you decrease the level of security on your computer. This is necessary and normal. The higher a security level is set, the less you can do with your computer. This trade-off between security and function happens because a higher security level, by design, restricts more activity on your computer more than a lower security level does. LiveUpdate requires a Low security setting in order to perform normal and expected functions. If you want to improve the security on your computer, you may use a Low setting temporarily to run LiveUpdate, and then change the setting to Medium or High when LiveUpdate is done.

To register Symantec Norton Internet Security, perform the following steps:

Connect to the Internet via an ISP.

Double-click the yellow, round, gridded icon next to the system clock.

The Norton Internet Security window appears.

Click Help, then click About.

Click the General tab, then click Register.

The registration wizard appears. Follow the prompts to register your product with Symantec.

Troubleshooting Conflicting Third-Party Applications with Norton Internet Security

If you still cannot register your program, there may be a third-party program, such as Intermute or other content filtering programs, interfering with your Internet connection. Temporarily disable the program, and try again to register the program. For instructions on disabling third-party applications, refer to application vender's website or the documentation that came with the software.

If you have other problems disabling the third-party software, follow the steps outlined in the Symantec document: How to Close Open Programs.

If this still fails to resolve the problem, uninstall your Symantec product. Disable the third-party application, connect to the Internet, and reinstall the Symantec product while you are still connected. This should remove any interference from third-party programs and allow the registration to continue normally

Questions & Answers To Product/Activation Key Issues

How does activation work?

Product activation links a computer hardware identifier that represents your computer with a unique product key or activation key that is assigned to each copy of the program. That information is then stored on a Symantec server-- without any of your personal information

The only information sent to Symantec is the product key and a made-up hardware identifier that represent the computer. Neither the product key nor the hardware identifier contains any personally identifiable information that can be traced back to you. The hardware identifier cannot be used to determine the make or model of a computer or its components.

If you choose to register your product, your registration information is stored in a different database that is not linked to the product's activation information.
