Scenario: The new Windows Security Center in Service Pack 2 for Windows XP reports that "Norton Antivirus 2004 is installed but its status is unknown."
Fix:
The issue appears to me to be that most people are running an outdated Norton Antivirus (or SystemWorks) engine version and an outdated LiveUpdate engine version.
If one or the other of these were updated I suspect Symantec would feed you the "WMI update" which is what is needed for WSC to interface with NAV, but how is anyone supposed to know this?
At any rate simply go to the appropriate link below to download the updates:
Norton Systemworks 2004 Professional: http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/nsys/nsw_2004_pe_files.html
Norton SystemWorks 2004 Standard: http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/nsys/nsw_2004_se_files.html
LiveUpdate (standalone): http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html
The newer LiveUpdate will install some newer Norton product updates and require a reboot, it will also prompt you "please run LiveUpdate again to obtain another symantec update". - after the reboot, run LiveUpdate again and it will grab "Norton WMI Update" - after this is installed a pop-up window appears asking if you want 'other applications' (windows security center) to know the status of Norton AntiVirus, if you want full integration into Windows Security Center uncheck the box and click OK, if you want to manage Norton Antivirus on your own , leave it checked and click ok, if this is the case, be sure and set Windows Security Center know that.. "I will monitor my antivirus software myself" so it stops bugging you.
Now my Norton SystemWorks 2004 is happy (and has a spiffy new interface for LiveUpdate, yay!), and the new Windows Security Center in XP SP2 is able to tell that Norton AntiVirus is installed, turned on, (or off) and up-to-date.
Symantec haven't released the patch on live update - that is exclusively
for 2004 programmes.
But those who have tried the patch on NAV 2003 . It is
available, for instance, here
http://www.neowin.net/staff/RadishT.._WMI_Update.rar
works with NSW 2003 and NAV 2003 and the SP2 Security Center. When I used
the patch, I noted a new module SymWSCX.exe which consumed 140+MB in some
six hours. I have since uninstalled NAV 2003 and am now a very happy NOD32
user, free of the drag from Symantec bloat.. |
