How to use the Windows Event Viewer to help troubleshoot errors in Windows XP/2000/NT

To open Event Viewer, perform the following steps:

Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

The Control Panel appears.

Click Performance and Maintenance, then click Administrative Tools

The Administrative Tools window appears.

Double-click Computer Management.

Something appears.

In the console tree, click Event Viewer.

The Application, Security, and System log icons are displayed in the right side of the Event Viewer window.

Check the SYSTEM Log & Application Log for Error events (Have red X Icon) & read the details (Double-click the item) for the errors. All systems will list some errors in the System Event log, but often, references to a specific application of hardware component will assist in determines the cause of lockups & blue screens. Searching the Microsoft Knowledge base http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;EN-US;KBHOWTO for the EVENT ID Number in the error details (Example: Event ID 7024) can be a handy troubleshooting shortcut.
