How to stop CD-ROM Autplay in WIN2000

If there is a CD-ROM changer attached to your computer, you may want to disable the Autorun (the automatic running of a compact disc or the automatic playing of an audio compact disc) feature. If the Autorun feature is enabled with a CD-ROM changer, each time a new compact disc is inserted into one of the trays, Windows will cycle through every tray in the changer.

This article describes how to disable the Autorun feature in Windows.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

There is no user interface option to enable or disable the Autorun feature. To enable or disable the feature, you must edit the registry. To do so, follow the steps below. Change the Autorun value in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom

To disable the Autorun feature, change the Autorun value to 0. To enable the Autorun feature, change the Autorun value to 1.

Restart the computer.

NOTE: The above method disables the Autorun feature completely. If you want to disable the feature on a per compact disc basis, you can hold down one of the SHIFT keys while inserting the compact disc.
