Yahoo has received permission from the Indian government to offer Internet telephony services from the country. The clearance will enable Yahoo to offer voice services for users in India of its instant messenger, a spokeswoman for Yahoo India said.Yahoo, of Sunnyvale, California, already has a subsidiary in India, but is setting up another company, Yahoo Internet Communications India to offer Internet telephony, the spokeswoman said on Monday.
The clearance will allow Yahoo India to offer Indian users of its site services like Internet telephony that it offers users in other markets, the spokeswoman said. Internet telephony has emerged as a large revenue opportunity in India, because of the large number of Indians working abroad in countries like the U.S.
The move by Yahoo comes ahead of plans by AOL to offer services in India. AOL will introduce Web-based services such as Internet telephony and instant messaging in India shortly, a spokesman for AOL India said on Monday. The spokesman did not give a date for the launch of these services. AOL already does software development, runs its networks and supports customers from its operations in India.
A large number of portals are targeting India because of its growing number of Internet users. The number of Internet users in India reached 37 million in September, up from 33 million in March, according to joint research by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in Mumbai and market research firm IMRB International also in Mumbai. The number of active users, who have used the Internet at least once in the last 30 days, has risen from 21.1 million in March to 25 million in September, according to the study.
Multinational Internet companies have focused on providing localized content and tools for Indian users. Yahoo, for example, launched last month plug-ins that allow users to chat on Yahoo Messenger in key Indian languages.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Yahoo Inc. said Tuesday it has contained a malicious program aimed at the millions of people who use its e-mail service, which ranks as the world's largest.
The worm, dubbed "Yamanner," infected a recipient's computer as soon as the toxic e-mail was opened. It then scanned contact lists for additional targets, according to security software maker Symantec Corp.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo said "a very small fraction" of its more than 200 million e-mail accounts were infected Monday when the problem was first identified. The worm didn't affect the next version of Yahoo's e-mail service, which remains in its test, or "beta," phase.
"We have taken steps to resolve the issue and protect our users from further attacks of this worm," Yahoo spokeswoman Kelley Podboy said. "The solution has been automatically distributed to all Yahoo Mail customers, and requires no additional action on the part of the user."
As a precaution against variations on the Yamanner worm, Yahoo advised its e-mail users to update their antivirus programs and block all incoming correspondence from av3(at)yahoo.com.
The worm arrived in the form of an e-mail containing JavaScript and contains the words "New Graphic Site" in the subject field, according to Symantec, the maker of Norton antivirus software.

CRM developer Oracle has acquired Telephony at Work, an IP-based software infrastructure provider for hosted contact center services, for an undisclosed sum. Telephony at Work's Call Center Anywhere is a multi-channel contact center. With the addition of Telephony at Work, Oracle will be able to unify contact center technology and CRM software, reducing the cost and complexity of integrating disparate contact center and CRM data, and offering a range of deployment options.
'Traditionally, CRM applications and telephony components have been delivered as separate, stand-alone applications requiring extensive computer-telephony integrations between the voice and data platforms,' said Mike Betzer, vice president, product management, Oracle. 'With the unified software Oracle intends to deliver running over IP telephony, service providers should see increased productivity and an enhanced customer experience.'

Oracle is considering developing its own Linux distribution in an effort to create a complete software stack, the company's chief executive Larry Ellison said in an interview with the Financial Times.
"I would like to have a complete stack," he said. "We are missing an operating system. You could argue that it makes a lot of sense for us to look at distributing and supporting Linux."
An Oracle Linux distribution would allow the company to integrate and test its database, middleware and enterprise applications. Ellison likened such a strategy to Microsoft's efforts to provide software for most mainstream applications.
Oracle has been building out its software stack in recent years, creating a portfolio of products that spans middleware such as an application service, databases and enterprise software including customer relationship management and enterprise resource planning.
The company has considered acquiring middleware providers including BEA and Jboss. Jboss was acquired last week by Red Hat.

Google Calendar, a free web calendar service, is being introduced by Internet search engine company Google Inc, to enable consumers to schedule events and share them with other users.
Google Calendar, available at www.google.com/calendar, provides features allowing it to be used in a similar way to desktop calendars such as Outlook and enables events to be 'dragged and dropped' from one calendar to another.
The service uses 'natural language processing' technology to simplify how events are entered and enables users to type commands to be interpreted by the system and inserted into the calendar. It uses Javascript, XML and RSS and users can make the events public on the web, share them with friends or keep them private.
Google said the user is able to create multiple calendars and confirmed that the service can search Gmail, Google's free e-mail service, for a mention of events, offering to add the information to the calendar. The service is not intended to replace corporate calendars although Google is working to offer connections to Microsoft Outlook, the Palm Treo smartphone and other mobile phone calendars.
