SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Server maker Sun Microsystems Inc. said Thursday it agreed to purchase Storage Technology Corp. for $37 per share in cash, or $4.1 billion, including the assumption of employee stock options.
The combination creates a network computing and data management firm which collectively had total annual revenue of more than $13 billion over the past four quarters. Louisville, Col.-based StorageTek makes tape drives and network management and backup software for businesses and government agencies.

But if you've got a Macintosh computer, or plan to buy one, those issues have been tackled. They're amply addressed in the latest update of Mac OS X, dubbed "Tiger," goes on sale Friday.

Sun Microsystems' Java Desktop System is a challenger to Windows that isn't quite ready for home users but is good enough to help scare Microsoft into reducing its monopolistic pricing. Java Desktop System, or JDS, is built around Linux, the computer operating system created by volunteer engineers and represented by a cute penguin mascot named Tux. While JDS itself is easy to use, the underlying Linux operating system can be a huge headache for non- experts.
